Kenya: ERC Leaves Out Sh3 Fuel Levy in July Price Review

Kenyans will get a temporary reprieve this month following delay in gazetting a notice to implement the Sh3 increment proposed in June.

Treasury Cabinet secretary proposed that the Roads Maintenance Levy be increased by Sh3 per litre of fuel to boost the roads annuity fund to support ongoing expansion and upgrade of roads. This would have pushed the total levy per litre to Sh12.

The Kenya Roads Board which manages the levy had been pushing for the increment to be effective July 1 in time for the monthly fuel price review today. However a delay in approval and subsequent publication of the legal notice in the Kenya Gazette means the increment will be deferred to next month or later, a senior official of KRB said.

"We are yet to receive any word and hence the three shillings raise will not be effected in tomorrow's pricing," said the ERC yesterday.

KRB's general manager in charge of finance Rashid Mohamed told the Star yesterday the increment will be delayed because the legal documents were still pending at the solicitor general's office despite being forwarded there two weeks ago.
