200MW of Power to be Imported from Ethiopia by Kenya

Daniel Kiptoo, Director General of the Energy Petroleum Regulatory Authority, reports that a technical team has been sent to Ethiopia to negotiate the details of the increased power purchase agreement.

Kenya has 3,030 MW of functional electricity capacity, out of 3,243 MW of total capacity.

In February 2025, however, the available capacity was 2,320 MW, just above the 2,316 MW peak demand that was reported during that same month.

The Ministry of Energy has stepped up its efforts to lift the three-year embargo on onboarding new independent power producers due to the narrow gap between peak demand and available capacity.

According to Daniel Kiptoo, to protect the grid from any disruptions, Kenya intends to import an extra 200 megawatts of power from Ethiopia. Kenya plans to boost the reserve margin to the standard of 15 per cent.
